If a tropical escape to an almost deserted island is what you desire, then a holiday on Lizard Island Resort is the answer to your dreams. Lizard Island is situated north from Cairns and Cooktown in Queensland, Australia and is a continental island located midway between the coast and the Great Barrier Reef. It has its own fringing reefs and a total of 24 white beaches around its perimeter. The Lizard Island region is one of the most popular in Queensland for both diving and fishing expeditions and a number of charter boats have regular trips and cruises to these waters. For divers the famous Cod Hole and the Ribbon Reefs are close and of recent years many divers have been having close encounters with Minke whales in these waters. Historically, Captain James Cook was the first European to visit Lizard island. After his altercation with Endeavor reef and repairing his ship in Cooktown, Cook was searching for a way to escape from the reef system that was blocking his path. He landed on Lizard Island and climbed to its highest peak and was then able to see the passage through the reef that let them escape into the Coral Sea. He named the Island after the many monitor lizards he saw there.
Today the island is one of the most exclusive resorts in Australia. It is accessed by air from Cairns and when you get there, there are only 40 luxury suites in the entire resort. The accommodation here and the service is five star and your days will be filled exploring the magnificent ecosystem around the island, diving, swimming sailing and fishing or simply lying back in the Azure Spa being pampered by experts, before dining in unbelievable surroundings on the finest cuisine imaginable.
