Lizard Island is situated north from Cairns and Cooktown in Queensland, Australia and is a continental island located midway between the coast and the Great Barrier Reef. For divers the famous Cod Hole and the Ribbon Reefs are close and of recent years many divers have been having close encounters with Minke whales in these waters.

Historically, Captain James Cook was the first European to visit Lizard island. After his altercation with Endeavor reef and repairing his ship in Cooktown, Cook was searching for a way to escape from the reef system that was blocking his path. He landed on Lizard Island and climbed to its highest peak and was then able to see the passage through the reef that let them escape into the Coral Sea. He named the Island after the many monitor lizards he saw there.
