Say the words “Hamilton Island” in Australia and the locals will tell you about the fantastic resort that has been built in the Whitsundays region of Queensland. In around 1980 a fellow by the name of Keith Williams had a grand dream to create the ultimate island resort. He purchased Hamilton Island Resort which was a blank canvas and had only been used as a cattle station in its past. Under Williams guidance and management he built a resort complete with boat harbour, jet standard airport and the first high rise hotels on any island resort in the region. His vision was for a totally integrated resort that was part of normal airline schedules and could be easily reached from any city on Australia’s east coast within a couple of hours. He succeeded in all his visions and today the island probably exceeds his wildest dreams. Keith Williams saw the dream come true and operated it himself for many years. Financial difficulties eventually saw the island sold and the new owners were the Oatley family and they have continued to expand the islands facilities and build new and lavish accommodation that will rival any other resort in the world. Hamilton Island is now the benchmark against which all other Australian Island resorts are judged.

At the top of the range are the new Hamilton Island yacht Club Villas and the superb Qualia resort. These both provide five star accommodation. Qualia is located towards the northern extremity of the island while the yacht club and the villas are situated beside the marina. On the resort side of the island are the two original high rise buildings, which have been continually upgraded. They are the Reef View hotel and the Whitsunday holiday apartments. There are also an assortment of other holiday homes and apartments around the island, most of which fall into the luxury category. Hamilton Island is really a small town with sealed roads and its own shopping services. Every conceivable holiday activity is available on Hamilton Island. The latest inclusion is the new Hamilton Island golf course which has been built on nearby Dent Island. This course is of world standard and can be accessed by a short ferry ride across the bay, which only takes a few minutes. The views across the Whitsunday Islands from this golf course will stun you and the course itself will become the Pebble beach of Australia.

Hamilton Island is so easy to get to you could come for a game of golf or stay for a week and never want to go home.
