Just a short ferry ride from Cairns, in Queensland, is the five star Green Island resort. This is a special place for visitors to experience the majesty of the Great Barrier Reef, while staying in five star luxury, right on the reef itself. Green Island, Australia, is a true coral cay formed by a build up of sand and broken coral on the leeward side of the coral reef upon which it sits. It is a breeding ground for thousands of sea birds and the surrounding waters are alive with hundreds of species of fish and colorful corals. On the wharf at Green Island, where the ferry docks, is one of Queensland’s oldest underwater observatories and the fish life here is fantastic despite the fact that hundreds of thousands of visitors come to Green Island every year. Those lucky enough to stay for an extended period are able to just walk into the water, off the beach and begin snorkeling over the coral.

The resort itself has two different styles of accommodation and they are the Reef suites and the Island suites. To keep island numbers to a minimum and reduce the impact that a permanent population has on such a delicate ecosystem, there are only 46 luxury suites on the island. The island has a day spa, so if you grow tired from all the outdoor exercise and exertion, you can return indoors and be pampered by the staff in the spa treatment rooms. The restaurant at the resort is as you would expect from a five star resort with a fantastic wine list and a selection of beautiful dishes.
